“Whatever people eat,
half of it fills their
stomach and half of
it fills the stomachs of the doctors. If
they eat only half
of what
they usually eat
then they would not be
sick at all, and there would be no need of
doctors”
We humans are the only species whose diet
is
unpredictable. The diet
of
all other animals is certain. Their basic physical needs and
their nature decides what to eat,
when to eat
and how much to eat.
We have all seen common pets like dogs and cats refuse or become selective of
the food when ill. They ask for no medicine, they just go into the backyard
sniff and chew on certain plants or grass guided by the medicine-man
within them. The same doctor dwells
within us too, but modern living has created
a disconnect between man’s nature and
his awareness. We are unable to tell
what is good to
eat,
when to eat and how much to
eat.
Our physiology is confused, numbed, blunted, and obliterated by the persistent
desire for instant cure, instant gratification, instant nirvana, instant karma
and instant food.
As part of the cosmos, our body is made up of chemical elements. It’s a beautiful
self
regulating chemical
factory producing bio-chemicals useful for
sustenance of life. If poison (toxic food) enters a man’s body
its does not see if the man is saint or a sinner. It
will cause the same harm.
We have made eating food
a completely mechanical
process. We just shove food into the mouth
whilst watching television or talking over the mobile or just being preoccupied
with our business and then leave the dining
table. It is no
longer a psychological process and this is
dangerous eating.
A ‘mindful’ process of eating compromises the following:
a) On the body level, the
right food should be healthy, non-
stimulating (food that does
not induce you to eat more – pickles for example is a stimulant) and non-violent (eating your food
in a state of anger and resentment makes the diet violent).
b) On the psychological
level
the
mind should be in a blissful state, graceful
and joyous – a
meditative state where you taste the flavors produced by a burst of the grain
being munched and chewed. Some of us can’t even recollect what they ate an
after their meals.
c) On the level of the soul
there should
be a feeling
of gratitude,
of thankfulness. Grace
(Prayers) before and after meals are meant to fulfill this third condition.
These three make food
the right.
Diet & Immunity
To maintain health
our
body needs to perform
3 functions on a daily basis viz. cleaning,
maintaining and
repairing.
To ensure that
these three functions are performed
at optimum level our blood needs to be
at a pH of 7.325.
When healthy, the
pH of blood is 7.325, the pH
of
spinal fluid is
7.325, and the
pH of saliva is 7.325. Thus the pH
of
saliva parallels the extra cellular fluid.
Virtually all
degenerative diseases including cancer,
heart disease,
arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney and gall
stones,
and tooth decay are associated
with excess acidity in the body. While the
body has a homeostatic mechanism
that
maintains a constant pH 7.325 in the blood,
this mechanism works by depositing
and withdrawing acid and
alkaline
minerals from
other locations
including the bones, soft
tissues,
body fluids and saliva. Therefore, the pH of these other tissues can fluctuate greatly. The pH of saliva offers a window through
which
you
can see the overall pH
balance in your body.
Cancer cannot
exist
in an
alkaline environment. All
forms of
arthritis are associated with excess acidity. Acid in the
body dissolves both teeth and
bones. Whatever health situation you
are
faced with, you can
monitor your progress toward a proper
acid/alkaline balance by testing
your saliva pH. If we with our lifestyle make our blood acidic then body regains balance by throwing
the
acid out.
At this time of ill-health, it
is important that we support the body
by making sure our internal environment
is
not conducive for viral activation i.e. we need to boost our immunity to be
able to deal
with anything that comes our way.
An alkaline
diet is one way to
energize our cells and thereby boost
our
immunity.
When ill, we can do so by increasing
the quantity of fruits,
lemon, ginger and plain water which helps in
cleaning
and providing essential energy. Eating easy to digest cooked meal and also eating just one or two small meal in a day will
help conserves energy.
Avoiding food that leave behind
a toxic, acidic
residue viz. grains,
milk and milk products, sugar,
fried
foods and meat help maintain the acid-alkaline balance (pH balance). Following this simple rule will see you
recover quicker.
In health a diet of 90% alkaline
and 10% acidic
is allowable. This means that
90% of what we eat should be vegetables and fruits and 10% can be a diet of
meat as a side-dish, more as an appetizer.
But today meat has become the main dish and vegetable the side-dish.
