Fr. Britto Joseph S.J. - Empowering Health Care

Meet my first Guru who reignited my latent passion in nature consonant medicine.

Fr. M. Britto Joseph s.j. a Jesuit Priest, belonging to the Madurai Province, is credited with evangelizing and proselytizing Naturopathy and Homoeopathy in India.

Affordable and safe health-care has always been a need and it still continues to be a necessity for the majority of the population (middle-class and rural) in India, a country where  major share of one’s earning is spent on housing and food, savings are meager, often liquidated by medical and hospitalization expenses. Families often end up in huge debt.  A country that enjoys a rich heritage medicine system in the form of Ayurveda and Naturopathy is today a victim of lifestyle diseases that is only burdening the existing inadequate health-care facilities in India.  It is against this background we can come to appreciate the value of Fr. Britto’s mission.

Fr. Britto has done a yeoman service through his mission to make people aware of the efficacy of Naturopathy and Homoeopathy and to this end he has run several health empowerment courses in Mumbai and its suburbs, in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as in Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.

The value of 'Preventive Healthcare' has gained credence and is a part of many top-line hospitals today merely as a promotional gimmick;  empowering people isn't part of their plan. Fr. Britto initiated this decades ago.

Over the decades thousands have attended his health empowerment courses and have experienced the power of nature’s healing.  Families have rediscovered the secret of good health through right diet (includes correct cooking) and managing and preventing chronicity of illness through naturopathic means.  Children of many of the families who attended the courses and adopted his teachings have grown to become doctors, especially homoeopaths. (This alone can be considered as a singular significant contribution).

Fr. Britto has profound knowledge of indigenous medicines and home remedies. He learnt acupuncture from Chinese doctors in Malaysia and also holds a Diploma in Siddha Medicine from Madurai. He is also a master in the art of therapeutic massage.

Fr. Britto was instrumental in the founding of the department of Naturopathy and Homoeopathy in the Holy Family Hospitals in Patna and Delhi, where he worked as Consultant for five and three years respectively.

Drug Interaction and its side effects - Is your doctor factoring drug interaction while prescribing?

In the US, 3 to 7% of all hospitalizations are due to Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR). ADRs occur during 10 to 20% of hospitalizations; about 10 to 20% of these ADRs are severe. If countries like USA which has a stringent food and drug administration get millions of patients who suffer adverse drug reaction then the scale of adverse drug reaction in a populous country like India, where controls are  lax and reporting tardy. This would be a similar story in other developing and under-developed nations. The most common categories of drugs withdrawn in the last decade ( Developed Countries) were non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (28%), anti-diabetics (14.28%), anti-obesity (14.28%), antihistamines (14.28%), gastroprokinetic drugs (7.14%), breast cancer and infertility drugs (7.14%), irritable bowel syndrome and constipation drugs (7.14%) and antibiotics (7.14%).  And it takes 3-5 years for a drug to be banned in India after it has been banned in other countries. Homoeopathic Posology through the eyes of Dr. S.P. Koppikar

This post brings out two important segments on the –one potency selection and the other repetition. The summary is based entirely on Dr Koppikar’s book “Clinical Experience of 70 Years in Homoeopathy”. What he says is not mere theorizing but comes as a result of ‘diligent’ experience; an experience of 70 years is definitely taking serious note of… It would have been easier to scan and upload the pages but then it would be unjust to the labour of the author.  The bold markings are my emphasis.  Brackets and italics are my words. 1.      In the chapter ‘How I learnt About Doses’ a.      He talks about Anaphylaxis or Allergic Shock as a result of a single dose (unchanged) repeated on the 10th day. When his own case met with disaster he then avoided repeating the dose early. b.     He then refers to Dr. Margaret Tyler who used to give 1M potency daily for 4 days and stop, with good effect. c.      The opposite action of high and low potencies – he narrates his verified experien
